madasakuweek

Just a reminder that MadaSakuWEEK0320 posts are still being accepted! If you’re bored this quarantine and you want to make some content, it will count as part of the event!

Also, if you find that the current prompts don’t inspire you, I am willing to make you a list of new ones! Let me know if there is an interest in this. Promptless submissions (including updates to existing works) to what I am going to call MadaSakuQuarantine2020 can also be included!

I know some of you might be burnt out from MadaSakuWEEK0320 or just not feeling like creating, and that’s fine! The quarantine event will only happen if people show an interest. Rules for past events will apply, save that promptless submissions will be accepted. Let’s all keep busy while staying safe! If the interest is there, I’ll start accepting submissions as soon as the prompt list comes up. Submissions not using the MadaSakuWEEK0320 prompts will count as MadaSakuQuarantine2020 posts, and be grouped on a desperate Master List.

Writing Commissions: Open!

bouncyirwin

I’m actually incredibly nervous to do this but I just lost my job and I figured it’s a good time as any to give it a shot.

Details:

- A drabble takes anywhere between 2 days to 1 week to write.

- A one-shot takes up to 2 weeks to write

- A Long one-shot takes up to 4 weeks to write.

The duration mostly depends on how complex the requested piece is in addition to whether it’s beta’d or not.

  1. You may request any number of details you wish, but kindly give me some creative freedom.
  2. I will reject any prompt that makes me feel too uncomfortable but generally the ‘I won’t Write’ bit covers 90% of it.
  3. Payment is upfront (although exceptions will be made for close and trusted fandom friends), but in case the product is deemed unsatisfactory by the commissioner, 50% of the price will be refunded.
  4. You can contact me here on Tumblr via private messages or via email at bouncyirwin.55@gmail.com

According to records, “If an epidemic occurs, draw a picture of me and show it to everyone,” said the yokai. The advice was perfectly worded for our current, social media-driven world. The legend recently resurfaced in Japan and, sure enough, everyone began creating their own artistic version of the Amabie and posting pictures to social media.

In recent days, there have been a number of posts on tumblr about third party apps that host AO3 fic on them. A lot of people are worried and even more people are pissed.

There is no need to send in emails to AO3 Support or to the Policy and Abuse team. They are fully aware of the situation and are probably drowning in emails right now.

Here’s what I know and what you can do about it.

Fluff app / Fanfiction Pocket Archive Library app / Archive Track Reader app:

These apps work as a sort of skin for the AO3 site itself. They don’t download works and redistribute them. They provide an access point to AO3.

The developers of these apps are making money from the app itself (through tips and subscriptions - both voluntary), which wouldn’t exist without the free content created by AO3 authors. Since people post their work to AO3 because it is free to access and hosted without ads, authors are understandably angered by this.

Because these apps are basically just a portal to the site, a DMCA notice will not apply in this case. All works currently hosted on AO3 will show up on these apps, because these apps are simply letting you view AO3 through their interface.

Woodsign company apps (including MCU, Harry Potter, Sherlock, Creepypasta, and more):

These apps seem to curate  some fic from the various fandoms and rehost it. They allow users to read offline, so it’s possible they are redistributing it. In this case, a DMCA takedown might be effective.

This app developer is also making money by hosting fanfic that was written and posted for free on AO3. They have put up a paywall so that you can only access the complete fic if you pay for it or rate the app in the App store.

If you want to post a negative review, consider saying things like:

* these fanworks are free already at archiveofourown.org
* you can kudos, comment, bookmark, subscribe, and mark to read for later for free with an archiveofourown.org account
* you can also download fics to read later in various file formats - both pdf and formats that are usable by ereaders
* archiveofourown.org is a website with full mobile browser accessibility. Anything you can do in this app, you can do on the site - for free, and without ads
* the Archive is a fully-licensed non-profit organization run by volunteers, unlike this for-profit app

There is no official AO3 app. The website is mobile friendly and if you want to have quick button access to it, you can Add to Homescreen on your phone and you can click in just like you would on an app. None of these third party apps can provide you with AO3 support. Only AO3 can do that. The best version of the site will always, always be the site itself.

If you’ve read this far, please signal boost so that AO3 Support can get fewer tickets. And if you love AO3, consider donating to them. They accept donations year round, not just during their pledge drives.

Lots of people have been pinging me in posts about this company and their various apps (pictured above). I don’t own any Apple products, so I haven’t been able to see these apps myself, but my understanding is that they pull data from AO3 and present it in the app, sometimes for a fee.

If you’re wondering whether your own stories are being hosted on these apps, you’ll need to either check for yourself or find a friend who can check for you.

I emailed AO3 Support about the subject, and here’s what I got in response:

Thanks for asking about this app. We checked with the OTW Legal team and our coders, and have some information to pass on. “The OTW does not own the works posted on the Archive – they are all owned by their respective authors.

For that reason, although the OTW can (and does) rely on trademark law to make sure that people don’t make confusing apps that would make people think the OTW or AO3 is associated with them, there’s nothing we can do about apps or services that contain works owned by AO3 users.  That is up to the authors themselves, who own the copyrights in their fanworks.

“Many sites have procedures (known as DMCA takedown procedures) that allow copyright owners such as fan-authors to request that their works be removed. The Fanfic Pocket Archive Library may have such procedures.   Regardless of whether those procedures exist, copyright owners can always demand that their works be removed from places they are not authorized, and as a matter of copyright law, sites should comply with such demands.

“The Apple App store also has procedures for reporting apps that infringe copyright:  https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/appstorenotices/#?lang=en

“The Google Play store has similar: https://support.google.com/legal/troubleshooter/1114905

“To be clear, to the best of our knowledge, the app is not wholesale scraping and storing data - they’re displaying content from the Archive in a very heavily modified format. Because the app’s subscription fee can be explained as “to support the app’s code base” and not for the content itself, it is within legal bounds. Our only suggestions are for the creators of the works to issue DCMA takedowns to the app developer, and to the appropriate app store if they find the developer response unsatisfactory.

tldr; There’s nothing that AO3 can do in this situation. It’s up to individual authors to report the copyright infringement to protect their own work. Start with the app itself and then go to the app store if they don’t do as you requested.

If you could signal boost this post, I’m sure AO3 Support would appreciate it. I can only imagine how many emails they’re getting about this right now.

🚨ATTENTION🚨

All Writers Published on Ao3:

This app, "Fanfic Pocket Archive Library", is lifting all public content from Ao3 and making it available through a service they profit from.

Your work has been stolen and is being used to make money for a third party.

^above are the ways in which the app makes money off of Ao3 content. The developer is called Simple Soft Alliance. Here's the app's Terms and Conditions.

Any fanfiction that can be accessed without a password on Ao3 is already available in this app. Yours, mine, every fan creator's. Whether this is illegal I do not know, but it is certainly unethical and needs to be fought. Ao3 is a site of unparalleled integrity and shows the utmost respect to creators, so this content grab is an even bigger slap in the face for that reason.

🚨Please flag/report this app in your app store. 🚨

🚩Google Playstore link

🚩Apple Store link (download app, then go to report it here )

Feel free to contact Ao3 as well to alert them to this issue. Let's take em down, folks. In the meantime, you can put your Ao3 in private mode to prevent any more data theft.

Please reblog and tag your writer friends. Signal boost this.

If the app developer wasn’t making money I wouldn’t care, but as it is all my fics are on this app and I’m NOT happy. Reported and also reported to Ao3

if you are a fanfic writer posting on ao3 and this app has your fics on there, IT IS COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.

so here’s what you can do. go to the google report form or the apple report form and say that it is copyright infringement. you’ll have to just show your ao3 profile link to prove it.

this is how i’m phrasing it, but please modify what you say so it doesn’t look like a mass complaint and ruin the legitimacy of the claim:

“I post my fanfiction works on www.archiveofourown.com, a platform that hosts transformative works. This app is reposting all of my writing content (at least 29 of my works) without my knowledge or consent. I did not give permission to the developer of this app to do so. Since I have copyrights to my own fanworks, as well do all writers that this app is reposting without their permission, I strongly urge the Apple Store to consider the legality of this app, which basically exists just to repost/copy all the works of fanfiction authors of archiveofourown.com.”

again, PHRASE IT IN YOUR OWN WAY but this is just an example of how to go about it, if the “explanation for complaint” seems intimidating to you.

i strongly urge every ao3 author to report this, and get this app down. otherwise, as AO3 suggests, we’ll have to issue DCMA Takedowns. those are a bitch to file. they take a lot of time and a lot of fees. hopefully, enough of us reporting this to apple/google will simply ban the app, and we can put this whole mess behind us.

madasakuweek

(a very special thank you to @jingmcastle for providing this absolutely stunning artwork!  I’d also like to thank @olliya for helping me figure out how to group the prompts (aka listening to me self-destruct, lol!)).

So here are your prompts, people!  Luckily there were no ties for 7th place, so everything ended up sorting itself out neatly.  As a reminder, you do not need to use all the prompts for any given day.  You are also allowed to mix and match prompts from any of the days, and make multiple submissions per prompt.  However, unlike other events, you must use at least one prompt per submission, unless that is not possible with the medium you are using.

MadaSakuWEEK0320 takes place between March 15 - 21, 2021.

Day 1 (15/3)

  • Mafia/Yakuza AU
  • Abducted
  • “Trust me.”

Day 2 (16/3)

  • Warring States AU
  • Hunted
  • “Marry me.”

Day 3 (17/3)

  • Demon AU
  • Love at first sight
  • “Do you really expect me to believe that?”

Day 4 (18/3)

  • Time Travel AU
  • Romantic
  • “Please tell me you didn’t.”

Day 5 (19/3)

  • Alpha/Beta/Omega AU
  • Akatsuki
  • “Tell me what you want… what you need…”

Day 6 (20/3)

  • Mythology AU
  • Secret Lover
  • “Don’t lay a finger on him/her.”

Day 7 (21/3)

  • Reincarnation AU
  • Dark
  • “Have we met before…?”

More information regarding the event can be found in the Rules.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

As an aside: @jingmcastle would like me to let you all know that she volunteered to create the artwork for this event in honour of her birthday on March 21st.  Please send her your thanks and well wishes!

Rules

Posting

  • MadaSakuWEEK0320 takes place between March 15 – 21. As soon as it’s March 15th in your timezone, feel free to start posting! The event will officially end once March 21st is no longer a day anywhere.
  • Early submissions will not be reblogged here until the after event starts and the day your submission is for begins.
  • While the event will officially end when the 21st does, that’s not to say it’s really over. Here at @madasakuweek, we want to cultivate great content and support content creators. That means trying to keep things low stress, and so late submissions are not just accepted, but welcomed.
  • (As a side-note, if you need rigid deadlines in order to motivate you, please treat them as such. If you need someone to nag you about why you aren’t writing, I will tag you in procrastination themed memes from my main blog. As the moderator of this event, I am here to help in whatever ways you need).
  • You may post your work wherever you like, in as many places as you like. However, in order for your work to officially count as part of MadaSakuWEEK0320 you must make a tumblr post containing, or linking to your work, or it cannot be shared by this blog.
  • You do not have to create something for every single day in order to be a part of MadaSakuWEEK0320, or any multiday event hosted by this blog.
  • On the flip side, you may make multiple submissions per day, if you want to! Create your heart out!
  • Unlike past events, you must use one (1) or more prompt(s) per submission for your work to count as part of this event.
  • You must tag @madasakuweek and use the hashtag #MadaSakuWEEK0320 within the first five tags of your submission
  • please also tag any and all prompts you use, to make it easier for me to sort through all the works.

Prompts

  • There are three prompts provided per day; an AU, a word, and a piece of dialogue. You may use one of them, or all of them, whatever inspires you.
  • YOU MUST USE AT LEAST ONE (1) PROMPT PER SUBMISSION!  While past events have accepted works not using any prompts, that is not the case for this one. The only exception to this rule is if the medium you are using is something in which using a prompt is not possible (ex. a statistical analysis, meta posts, etc). Posts will be judged on a case by case basis. We want to try to be as inclusive as possible, while still being fair to everyone.
  • Along those same lines, if you want to combine prompts from different days, that’s fine too! If you combine prompts from different days, it’s your choice for which date to post them.
  • Dialogue prompts don’t have to be word for word, or grammar for grammar, so to speak. If you need to change the punctuation, or add a word, that’s fine, just try to keep to the essence of the dialogue.
  • Prompts can be found here

Acceptable Media

  • All the things!
  • Seriously, if you can create it, then it is acceptable. That means everything from art and fic to translations, moodboards, songs, comics, headcanons, meta analysis, research papers, interpretive dance, you name it.
  • Please only submit your own works unless given express permission by the creator to post their work in this event. That means that if you find something that fits the prompts on another website, and which is not already posted on tumblr, or a friend is asking you to post their work on their behalf, you need permission from the creator not just to repost their work, but to participate in the event. Please contact this blog privately in order to confirm that the creator is fine with participating in the event, or make it clear in your post.

Adult and Dark/“Problematic” Content

  • Smut/18+/NC17/explict works are accepted! However, in the tags, and at the top of the work, you must indicate the content is nsfw/smut/18+/NC17/explict, etc.
  • Dark works are welcome, but in order to be included in the event, as well as to protect people from things they don’t want to see, they will need to be labelled and tagged appropriately.
  • In the tags and at the top of the work, you must indicate that the work is dark, as well as any triggers and warnings . If the work is not labelled and tagged properly, it will not be reblogged until it is. If a work is deemed as lacking the appropriate tags/disclaimer, you will be contacted privately and asked to provide the appropriate warnings. Once that’s done, your post will be shared.
  • If posting a link to a work hosted on a different site containing dark/nsfw material, it must be tagged and labelled appropriately before the link is provided, in the same way as other submissions.
  • Additionally, dark and nsfw content must be placed under a “cut” or “read more,” unless you are simply providing a link to another website. If you don’t know how to use a cut/read more on tumblr, please see this resource. The link explains how to use the “read more” feature on desktop, but if you’re on mobile, I can show you a trick for that. If you have any questions/need help, feel free to contact this blog privately.
  • Here is an example of how you might label and tag your work:

[Title]

@madasakuweek

Prompt: [chosen prompt(s)]

Warnings: nsfw, smut, dark, dubcon, dead dove: do not eat

~~~Read More~~~
[your content here]
#madasakuWEEK0320 #nsfw #smut #dark #dubcon #dead dove: do not eat
  • While we don’t want to stifle creativity and self expression, or police works, it is important to have a safe environment for everyone to enjoy. It’s a delicate balance, allowing and promoting the exploration of dark topics while keeping people safe—which is why tagging things appropriately is imperative.
  • I’m not sure exactly where to draw the line between “acceptable” versus “inappropriate” dark content—there are too many variables to say absolutely “this is or isn’t okay.” Additionally, I don’t want to stifle anyone’s creative expression. However, I’ve been a part of the MadaSaku community for several years, and I have found it to be a place of respect and good judgement, filled with great people. Therefore I am trusting you to judge for yourself what is and isn’t appropriate in terms of what you create, and more importantly, what you choose to consume.
  • That being said, and just to be safe, while I don’t expect to have to do this, I maintain the right to disqualify submissions if I feel they do cross that line.
  • If you have any questions as to whether your work is appropriate, please feel free to contact this blog privately through the messages, or you can contact me directly at @purple-possibilities. I doubt there will be any issues, but if you’re worried then I am available for consultation.
That should be it! Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions you may have. Have fun, and remember, to
tag @madasakuweek and use the hashtag #MadaSakuWEEK0320 within the first five tags of your submission!
PLEASE PICK YOUR PROMPTS FOR MADASAKUWEEK!!!
...and reblog this if you can!
Hey guys!!! Responses have been great to the survey! We’re at 73 participants, and most of the choices are clear winners, with few exceptions. Due to that, and in the hopes of getting the prompts out ASAP (and because @jingmcastle has already sent me the art for it, how fabulous, everyone go send some love that way)
I’ve decided to close the survey tonight (for those of us whom it is still Jan 22nd) at 11:59 PST.
That means you all have roughly 9 hours left to fill out the survey if you haven’t already!
Please reblog this post if you can!
